Packet Description

Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.

1 Thessalonians 4:1

In the New Testament, Christianity is seen as a walk, or as a day-by-day, ordinary activities, lifestyle.  It is not a once or twice a week event.  It is too easy for us to see our Christian life as a Sunday and Wednesday night kind of thing and the rest of the week doesn't matter.  When we gather together as a group of believers it should be a continuation of what is happening the rest of the week.

What you'll find in this packet is intended to be an aid to you.  First, you'll find a Bible reading and catechism schedule.  The Bible reading schedule has you read a chapter of Scripture once a day.  Sundays are for reading in the Old Testament, Wednesdays are for reading of the wisdom scriptures and the rest of the week is devoted to the New Testament.  Along with the Bible there is one catechism question to learn each week.  Catechisms are a great way to learn the basic doctrines of the Christian faith as it is done in a simple question and answer format.  These questions are taken from the catechism written by Charles Spurgeon who was a baptist pastor during the 19th century.

Second, you'll find a monthly hymn.  I have chosen one hymn for us to study a month.  Hymns have been a part of the church since the beginning and always will be, just read the ones in Revelation.  Each month you are to read the hymn text and learn what it is saying about God.  Then go to Oak Hill's website on the Crossfire page (www.oakhillhumboldt.org/crossfire.html) to hear the hymn sung.  Some of the hymns have been set to different music and some have had choruses added.  Hopefully, this study will help us to broaden our musical tastes that we might not lose the gifts of the great men and women of God that have walked this walk before us.

Thirdly, you will find a weekly crossword puzzle and coloring page.  The puzzle is based on the Bible reading for the week and can be used to help you think about what you have read.  The coloring page is meant to be given to the children in your family.  If you use the Bible reading plan with your family, the coloring page can be used to reinforce one of the passages that was read that week.  If you don't have any children in your family, give it to a child in the church or use it as an evangelism tool.

If you want extra copies of anything in the packet, let me know and I'll get you some more.

Finally, all of this will filter into our Wednesday night gatherings.  The Bible study for the evening will be based on a passage that was in the Bible reading plan.  We will review the catechism question for the week together.  We will take a brief look at the hymn of the month and sing it together.  Hopefully, Wednesday nights will be a continuation and not a distraction or a contradiction to your Christian walk the rest of the week.
