Point #4 Jesus Christ

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teaching. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into Heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal, visible return to earth.

We have already studied the first part of the doctrine of the Son (God’s only begotten Son) under the discussion on the Trinity. Here the emphasis is on the humanity of Christ and on His work on our behalf. He was fully human. As a human, He could take our place so that we might not have to pay with our lives for our sin.

We believe in His

conception by the Holy Spirit and virgin birth, Matthew 1:18, 23 Two natures, that of God and that of man were permanently combined into one personality.

sinless life, Hebrews 4:15 He did nothing which would require a sacrifice in payment, yet He could fully identify with mankind.

miracles, John 20:30-31 His miracles prove His teachings and His claim to being equal to the Father.

teachings. Hebrews 1:1-2 All that Jesus said was from the Father.

We believe in His

subsititutionary atoning death 1 Peter 1:18-19 Wrongs must be paid for, either by the one hurt or the one committing the wrong. He died so that we would not die. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

bodily resurrection Luke 24:6-7 His resurrection confirms His deity, the success of His sacrifice, and the power available to His people (Romans 1:4).

ascension into Heaven, Acts 1:9 Jesus returned to the glory which He had from eternity.

perpetual intercession for His people, and

Hebrews 7:25 Being man forever, He has an eternal interest in His brethren.

personal, visible return to earth. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 As He came once in humility, so He will one day return in power and glory.
