Point #3:   God the Father

We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love.  We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.

These are not God’s only characteristics, of course, but these should be enough to distinguish the God of the Bible from the gods of other religions.  Perhaps the best way to understand God’s nature is to meditate on what the world would be like, or what our faith would be like, if God did not have any given characteristic.

an infinite

Psalm 139:7-12   There is no place where He is not, although He is different than   creation.  Revelation 1:8  He has existed from the before the beginning of   time and will never cease to exist.

personal

Exodus 3:14   He is alive, having a will, thoughts, feelings, choices, and  self-awareness.

spirit

John 4:24   He has no physical existence.

He is perfect in holiness,  1 Peter 1:16   He is unique and not tainted with evil..

wisdom  Psalm 139:1-6   He knows everything (all past, present, and future events)  including the best way to use that knowledge.

power, and  Genesis 17:1   He can achieve anything by power that power is able to do.

love  1 John 4:8   God has compassionate “feelings” towards man and Himself.

We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men,

Matthew 5:43-45  Despite sin and suffering, humans still experience God’s mercy.

that He hears and answers prayer

Matthew 21:22  This assumes God’s inability to go against His Nature.

and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.

1 John 2:2  No one who calls upon the name of Jesus will be left unsaved.
