Denominations exist due to a variety of definitions of spirituality.  “Peace” churches (Mennonite, Amish, and Quakers) prize non-violence.  “Fundamental” groups (some Bible, Wesleyan, and some Baptist) strive to live separate from the world.  The more liturgical churches (Lutheran, Episcopal, and Catholic) emphasize certain worship forms and following the example of Jesus in helping others.  “Charismatic” churches (Cornerstone, Foursquare and Assembly of God) stress an inner experience of the Holy Spirit and the use of spiritual gifts in service to God.

Denominations also exist due to a variety of means to achieve the spirituality as defined.  The rites of Baptism and Communion, the experience of the baptism of the Spirit and speaking in tongues, Bible study and prayer, food pantries and cancer walks, meditation expertise and sit-Ins-all may be encouraged in different settings to achieve spirituality.

Oak Hill Baptist church could be classified as an “evangelical” church.  We believe in certain truths about Jesus Christ, leading to s spirituality marked by faith, hope and love centered in Christ.  “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in you heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).  We believe also that spirituality is developed through Bible study, prayer, worship, and fellowship.

The verse from Isaiah 61:3 on the home page was quoted by Jesus the first time He spoke in public (Luke 4:16-21).  Jesus was explaining why He came to earth.

Through His death on the cross and His resurrection from  the grave, He would...

The result of Christ’s work in people’s lives would be righteousness.  He promised to change people through His power not through their own efforts.  They would become oaks of righteousness- v. 4.

The promise is powerful.  We are sinners on our own, anything but good people.  “There is none righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10).  When we believe in the death of Jesus Christ, we trade our sins for His righteousness.  “God made him who knew no sin to become sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Our faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ brings into us the ability to start living differently.  “If we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him’ (Romans 6:8).  We will not gain perfection in this life, but through the power of God, we are growing in the right direction.

So an oak tree seems to be a fitting symbol for a church.  We hope to raise oaks trees of righteousness by the grace God has given to us.
